Elijah (Ligh) Carroll and Sallie Perry
This picture hung in the home of Willie and Mary

10600 - Revised 05-99

Elijah, the father of Elijah Carroll, moved to Henry County before 1835 and Married Judith
Hall. The 1860 census shows his wife to be Martha born in 1828, apparently her
middle name was Prudie (I'm not sure why the two different names).
The Elijah Carroll in the picture above is a son of Elijah.
Elijah apparently died between 1860 and 1870. He is not listed on the 1870
census for Henry County. He is buried in the Perry cemetery located just North
of Henry Tennessee not far from the New Bethel church. I visited this cemetery
in 1990. It is not kept very well but you can still locate the grave. The Perry
cemetery is small with the following graves that can be identified: Thomas D.
Hall, W. W. Hall, Bettie McCain, Emma Lee McCain, Ervin Elmer McCain, Ida Geneva
McCain, J. J. McCain, James L. Perry, Johnie Perry, L. J. Perry (Luna Hall), and
Vandelia Perry.
The 1850 census also shows a daughter Sarah age 1, she is not listed on the 1860
census. She may have died when a child. Also listed on the 1860 census is Joseph
who was supposed to be the first son of the second marriage, he was born in 1849
while Judith was still living. It seems odd that he would be listed as the son
of the second marriage. Judith must have died before 1852.
The letter and information concerning Elijah's family was in the possession of
my Grandmother, Mary Jane Lawrence when she passed away and was given to me by
my grandfather, Willie Lawrence.
This letter was sent to some of the Perry descendants by Mrs. Essie B. Crass who
lived at Paducah, Ky at the time.
Our Grand-father Elijah Perry came from North Carolina, when a young man and
settled on a farm located on the Henry-Como, Tennessee road about four miles
from Henry. He married sisters (at different times) by
the name of Hall, and reared two sets of children, five by the first wife and
six by the second wife, a total of 11 children. He lived on this same farm until
he died. Mamma is the only one of the 11 children children now living. Her
mother was Prudie Hall, and died when Mamma was very, very young. Mamma does not
know if any of the grand-children by her father's first marriage are living
(with the exception of Sallie Mathis. As she is 80 years old and living with her
daughter in Vista California). She thinks all the rest have passed away.
The grand-children of the second marriage to Prudie Hall are listed and if you
know of any omissions or corrections in the list of names or addresses please
let me know, in order that I may correct same.
It makes us all sad to notice the large number of the "Perry" descendants, who
have passed away. It has been interesting to me to collect this information and
hope you will put it away for safe keeping, as I am sending all the
grand-children a copy of same.
Credit is due Mrs. Bertie Gockley (Perry) in Los Angeles, California as she ask
Momma to send her a list of her father's (George W. Perry) relatives, therefore
we all will share this valuable record.
With love and best wishes,
Mrs. Essie B. Crass - 403 North 7th St. Paducah KY
On the 1850 census of Henry County are listed the following Perry families:
Austin Perry born in South Carolina about 1804. Levi
Perry born in North Carolina abt 1811. Lewis Perry born in South Carolina abt
1797. Stephen Perry born abt 1815. Some of these men must be brothers of Elijah,
if not all. There are also several Perry families listed on the Weakley County
census.
