Liberty IV Pump and Well

Old Liberty IV
Water Pump
and
Fountain
[FrontPage Save Results Component]
At some point, while I attended school at Liberty IV, this pump and fountain was installed. You can see the pipe on the right side that delivered water to the fountain which is visible at the extreme right side of the picture. This pipe continued on through the concrete fountain to the end and in the part where the trough is the pipe had holes drilled in it at an angle where the water came as the pump was operated.

As one might imagine when the pump was pumped vigorously the water would shoot up from the holes about six or eight feet. Well when some of us boys were pumping water for the girls or some of the younger kids we would pump it as hard as we could. Doing this would spray the ones drinking in the face and sometimes get them wet. We enjoyed this very much but got in trouble from the teacher more than once for doing it.

This picture was taken in 1986 or 1990 when I was in Henry County. I would guess that if the old pump was primed it would still pump water.

The old Liberty IV Well

Before the pump the school's source of water was this old well. It is just across the road from the school. This picture was made about 1990 when I was visiting in Tennessee.

The older boys had the chore of hauling water a few times a day up the hill for everyone to drink. The water was good but we were not especially fond of carrying water up the hill.
